With temperatures on the rise and Summer quickly approaching, it’s time to start thinking about ways to keep your home cool.  And what better way to keep your home cool than by not raising your utility bills! In this post, we’ll go through a few efficient ways to help manage the temperature of your home without running your air conditioning system.

1. Keep Blinds Closed
It may seem like a simple concept, but most people don’t actively think about closing their blinds on hot sunny days. It can be very tempting to keep all of your blinds open to get the most sunlight in your home, but that’s exactly what brings the heat up! Instead, you should try to keep as many blinds closed as possible. This will help keep some of the heat out of your home and keep your air conditioning from running frequently.

2. Utilize Ceiling Fans Properly
Many people do not realize that ceiling fans actually have more than just an on/off setting. In the Summer your ceiling fans should be set to run counterclockwise in order to keep cool air circulating properly through a given room. Also, be sure to only run your fans when you are in the room, otherwise you will be wasting electricity to circulate air in a room with no occupants.

3. Keep Doors Closed!
When you leave a room make sure you close the door! This will keep individual rooms cool and avoid having multiple air conditioning zones attempting to bring your entire home to the same temperature equilibrium. If you want to go one step further, break out those draft blockers from the Winter and put them back on your doors for the Summer months. They will help keep your rooms sealed off and cool without the air conditioning running constantly.
