heating system winter

Fall is upon us once again and the temperature is starting to show it. As the cool weather begins to become more consistent it is important to start testing your heating system to ensure that everything is in working order and that your heating system can reliably heat your home through the winter. There is nothing worse than having your heating system break down just as winter is getting into full swing. That’s why in this month’s blog post we will discuss a few simple steps to help you make sure that your heating system is prepped and ready for winter!

1. Check & Change The Furnace Filter

In most home HVAC systems the air conditioning and heating system blow air through the same filter. So, yours is probably pretty dirty after using the air conditioning all summer! Check and change all of the filters for your heating system including registers, output vents, and of course the furnace itself. We recommend changing your filter every one to three months depending on your level of use to keep your indoor air cleaner and to reduce strain on your furnace. Start the heating season off with a clean filter, and buy a supply of extras so you have them on hand throughout the winter.

2. Clear Vents & Registers

Sometimes it’s necessary to move furniture around to keep in or out of the summer heat while indoors. But now is the time to move things back and make sure that all of your vents and registers are unobstructed in order to provide your home with the proper flow of warm air. While you’re checking the vents and registers be sure to clear out any dust or debris that may restrict airflow, as well as to replace any filters if your system utilizes vent or register filters.

3. Check Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Whether your heating system is brand new or a decade old, it is always paramount to ensure that your home’s carbon monoxide detectors are working properly. Any heating system new or old has the potential for mechanical failure or defect, causing the release of carbon monoxide into your home. Carbon monoxide can be incredibly dangerous even in small amounts, so take no chances and inspect your detectors carefully.

4. Schedule A Maintenance Appointment

Even if you’ve taken all the steps above to help ensure your heating system operates smoothly, there is always a chance that something mechanical may need attention.
