Are There Benefits To Going Ductless?

Ductless air conditioning systems have been on the rise in popularity over the last decade, especially for the residential sector. This sharp increase in popularity is not unwarranted either, as these systems provide many benefits. In this month’s post, we will discuss some of the benefits of residential ductless air conditioning systems.

Installation of ductless air conditioning is typically far less invasive than central ducted systems, and does not require the repeated installation and removal of standard window units. For example, the hook-up between the outdoor and indoor units generally requires only a three-inch hole through a wall for the conduit. Also, most manufacturers of this type of system can provide a variety of lengths of connecting conduits. So, if necessary, you can locate the outdoor unit as far away as 50 feet from the indoor evaporator, which allows for the outdoor unit to be placed in a more convenient and less obtrusive location.

One of the main advantages of ductless mini splits is their small size and flexibility for zoning, or heating and cooling individual rooms. Some models can have as many as four indoor air handling units connected to one outdoor unit, which correlates to four individual zones per outdoor unit. The number of zones that can operate on a single outdoor unit varies depending on how much space, measured in square feet, each indoor unit is required to heat or cool. Each of the zones will have its own thermostat, so you only need to condition that space when it is occupied, saving energy and money.

Ductless air conditioning systems have no ducts, so they avoid the energy losses of central forced air systems which require more energy to force air through duct-work. Duct losses can account for more than 30% of energy consumption for air conditioning, especially if the ducts are in an unconditioned space such as an attic.
