Now that the cold Winter months are starting to appear in our rear view mirror, it’s time to start thinking about HVAC maintenance and air conditioning system maintenance for Summer! The costs associated with keeping your home cool and comfortable add up fast, and if your HVAC system isn’t running efficiently, then your costs only go up. Fortunately, there are plenty of things you can do to make sure your HVAC system is up to the task with a little do-it-yourself preventative maintenance!
1. Replace A/C Filters
Replacing your air conditioning system filters is typically easy to do and can have a big impact on the health of your HVAC system. A clean filter can reduce your energy usage significantly! Consult the manual for your system and determine if it has temporary or permanent filters. If your filter is temporary, replace it every month on a day you’ll remember — like the first of the month. And if it’s a permanent filter, take it out and rinse it off on a monthly schedule instead.
2. Clean Registers & Return Vents
Dirt, pet hair, and other small debris can build up around the floor registers and return vents around your home every single day. It’s a good idea to regularly vacuum over them, but during a spring deep clean, you’ll want to take it a step farther. Take the ventilated cover off of the vent register and use a wide, flat vacuum hose adapter to thoroughly clean any built up dust and debris from the vent. Afterward, clean both sides of the vent cover thoroughly with a microfiber wipe.
3. Consider A Smart Thermostat
Smart thermostats allow you to program the temperature settings in your home. Most smart systems will allow you to set your home to be warmer during periods when you’re away and more comfortable when you’re home. The system will also provide reports of ways to save even more energy and lower your monthly bill. Follow its recommendations and you’ll get new tips that can help you save even more.
4. Clear The Drainage Hole
Air conditioners typically have a drainage hole located at their cabinet’s base. The hole is usually beneath the evaporator fins. In order for your air conditioner to work effectively, this hole must be kept clear of any debris, dust, or sludge build-up. While the hole may be too small for you to clean out manually, a paper clip or small piece of wire should work.
5. Schedule A System Inspection
Once you’ve accomplished all the tasks above, it’s time to bring in the experts. Call the Robillard Team to take a more detailed look at your system and identify problems you may have otherwise missed, and perform the more involved steps of proper HVAC maintenance. You may just learn some insights that will be invaluable in your ongoing efforts to reduce your energy usage and total bill!
